Matson is recruiting for a Senior Adjuster - Personal Injury. This position is responsible for managing and administering personal injury claims including vessel crew (Jones Act), asbestos, workers’ compensation, auto liability, general liability and third party claims as well as general protection & indemnity (P&I) claims. The individual must have technical claims handling skills as well as excellent communication skills. The position is responsible for producing claims reports for the marine safety committee, OSHA, audits and financial reporting as well as preparing reports required by the Department of Labor, State of California and State of Hawaii for self-insured claims.

Position reports to the Manager, Claims
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises the administration and settlement of claims filed by crew members of Matson’s Jones Act vessels and cargo claims filed by customers of Matson and its subsidiaries
Supervises the administration and settlement of personal injury claims which include crew, third party, and asbestos. Such claims are adminstered in-house
Supervises the administration and settlement of auto liability, general liability, and workers’ comp (state act and longshore) claims which are handled by third party adminstrators
Supervises the administration and settlement of run-off self-insured workers’ compensation claims in Hawaii and California as well as self-insured longshore workers’ compensation claims (pre-1999)
Ensures that claims are handled in compliance with Matson’s values, SOX requirements, and all laws and regulations
Ensures that risk management information system (RMIS) produces reliable and accurate information
Reviews and monitors adequacy of claims reserves that are documented in compliance with SOX standards
Monitors the performance and reserves of third party administrators who provide claims handling services
Develops and reviews procedures related to claims handling and reporting. Provides training on claims procedures and loss prevention to operating units and ship personnel as needed
Qualifications, Education and Experience
5 years personal injury claims adjusting experience
Excellent communication and negotiating skills
Excellent customer service skills and the ability to stay calm in adverse situations
Experience with claims database systems and proficiency with Excel, Word, Outlook
Bachelors Degree, preferred
Knowledge of Jones Act, vessel and marine terminal operations, preferred
California Workers’ Compensation Claim Adjuster certification, preferred
