This position supports the VP, Enterprise Risk Management in delivering services to senior leadership and operational subsidiaries in all aspects of corporate insurance programs. Responsible for (1) administering and maintaining the organization’s comprehensive casualty, property and specialty insurance programs; (2) analyzing the organization’s insurance needs; (3) supervision of certain risk management personnel, including analysts and contract manager; (4) working in tandem with Risk Manager, Finance & Analytics and within the organization to proactively identify risk and drive improvements to control and reduce operational and contractual exposure; (5) managing insurance industry relationships with various brokers and underwriters.
This is a solution-oriented position requiring a customer service mindset, strong verbal and written communication skills, and agile critical thinking. Requires internal drive and accountability, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a dynamic and diverse group.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)
Leads the organization’s efforts on design, implementation and management of property, casualty and specialty insurance programs, including renewals and related tasks (i.e. insurer selection, quote and proposal evaluation, contract/rate negotiation, retentions/limits, binders, certificates of insurance, and summaries of insurance).
Identifies, analyzes and classifies insurable risks for financial impact to the organization, including expected frequency, trends and severity.
In tandem with Risk Manager, Finance & Analytics, develops and interprets analytical tools used to evaluate appropriate retention and policy limits.
Works with Risk Management staff, subsidiary representatives, Legal and Third Party Administrators/Adjusters on all litigated and other non-routine, large and/or unusual claims.
In coordination with Risk Management staff, works throughout the organization to proactively identify risk and drive improvements to control and reduce operational and contractual exposure.
Under direction of VP, Enterprise Risk Management, develops, recommends and implements appropriate risk financing techniques, which may include insurance, self-insured programs offering intracompany buy-downs, and creating and maintaining a captive insurance program.
In tandem with Risk Manager, Finance & Analytics, maintains insurance industry relationships including brokers, consultants, underwriters, and actuaries.
Regularly presents to underwriters, brokers, and other stakeholders both virtually and in-person.
Monitors Alaskan and National legislative initiatives relating to insurance, claims and liability; interprets the impact of these initiatives and communicates recommendations to VP, Enterprise Risk Management and other stakeholders.
Develops and updates professional risk management, insurance, and claims reports and delivers them to management.
Responsible for the development of and adherence to department budget.
Manages and supervises employees, both co-located and at separate geographical offices.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum ten years' of experience at high level of responsibility in the insurance industry or risk management arena related to either providing or procuring insurance products
Strong understanding of general contract terms and conditions including indemnification provisions
Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or equivalent certification preferred
Ability to utilize and apply probability and statistical analysis to practical situations
Reasoning and analytical skills in interpreting common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents
Proficient in technical writing, conducting investigations, and research and development
Proficient in use of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams, and various video conferencing programs
Strong written and verbal communication skills
